What’s the point of an audition?

What’s the point of a dance audition? What’s the point of any audition for that matter? Auditions are created in order to find the best of the best. But shouldn’t anyone who wants to participate have that chance? To me this whole idea behind auditions is very intriguing. First you have the view of the judges. These may be teachers, or conductors, or writers who are looking for the absolute best dancer to add to their cast because they are trying to maintain a good production. In that sense auditions seem very fair because you wouldn’t want some two-bit Nancy running around in heels looking like a fool now would you? But on the other side of the coin you have those people who are being judged. These are everyday ordinary people who have come to try out for their dream. They may have endured blistering weather to get there, or injuries and above all, the devastating feel of nervousness and pressure to do well. Shouldn’t these people be allowed to live out their dreams? It’s an interesting debate to say the least.
